Some Thoughts While Waiting for iPad 3
As I followed last week’s big Apple announcement in the press room at CeBIT, the enormous technology trade fair that takes place each March in Hanover, Germany, I wasn’t particularly impressed one way or the other. It’s hard to get excited reading live blogs, and not seeing the presentation live. Oh sure I ordered one the next morning, but like the iPad 1, this one isn’t for me — not really. It’s a present for my wife whose birthday dove-tailed nicely with this announcement. But as I sit and wait for the iPad 3 to arrive, I’ve been thinking about it...

Recent studies by IDC and ABI Research found what you probably already knew — that there are more smart phones and your workers are becoming increasingly mobile. And that’s going to have broad implications for IT. First of all let’s look at some of the trends. Last week RIM got slammed when they had a worldwide outage of their Blackberry service for 3 days. It was not only embarrassing to the company, it cost them value and left some wondering if the brand would recover. First of all, it’s worth noting that up until that point, RIM had had a sterling reputation for up time. A survey (free PDF download) conducted by the e-tailing group last March found that while more consumers are going online to make purchases on their mobile phones, many of them are still unimpressed with the mobile buying experience. And one of the key issues was connection speeds. The survey, which was sponsored by shopcoffeetable.com, a company that aims to bring retail catalogues to the iPad, reported that Barclay Capital found Mobile commerce sales in the United States are expected to hit $5.3 billion in 2011, up 83 percent from a year ago and a recent Adobe survey found that 62 percent...
read moreFive Trends From the Velocity Conference
by Alon Ben-Shoshan I spent several days last week at the O’Reilly Velocity Conference in Santa Clara, CA. As I walked the halls, listened to keynotes and attended sessions I came away with five clear trends in web site monitoring. While this conference is certainly on the geeky side, there are trends that even the biggest technophobe among us can understand. It’s a Mobile World It’s not exactly news that smart phones running operating systems like iOS from Apple and Google Android are having a huge impact on web site owners. It forces web site owners to tune their sites...
